So there we were, taking the leap and calling ourselves "organics in training". Don't get me wrong - I still buy the processed foods that I have always loved - I'm Italian with not enough time on my hands and if you look hard enough, you will find a box of noodles somewhere in or around my kitchen. But when it's available, we've been trying to buy organic.
Cleaning products, we have gone to non-toxic, 100% biodegradable. With the other stuff, you may be getting the dirt on the floor but what you're putting there in its place is a heck of a lot worse for your body than a few chunks of what we normally find in our gardens.
(A reassurance that we are doing the right thing by using these cleaning products came a few months back. See, when you're moving to actual cleaners, it's not good to throw your old ones away, only to sit in some land-fill for years and years. So, they say to use them up instead of throw them out. I chose to give some of them to our local shelter, and kept a few others (don't ask me why). I have been using the leftovers ONLY when the kids aren't around. Well, I was cleaning our bathroom using a green aerosol can with little brushes all over it. I had my shirt and hand over my mouth and nose, the window open and the fan on. But, apparently my throat was not used to these chemicals anymore and I lost my voice. It's amazing what those harse things can do to you. Anyway, I digress. Back to the point.)
But then, it dawned on me. We, my wonderful, tolerant husband and I (who, by the way, still has a hard time believing that any cleaning product can REALLY be that bad...), are the parents of 4 - two of the human kind and two furry kids (most would call them dogs). We rescued both of them from abusive homes. We may not be physically abusing those poor pooches, but what was the stuff we put in their food bowls doing to them? And those doggie treats that cost $1.03 at Wal-Mart, how healthy can those really be? I stared at the food I had just put into their bowls, then looked over at them to see their 6 little black dots staring back at me. Two tiny noses and 4 marble-sized black eyes. Why did I not think to go natural and organic with them earlier?
So, my next quest was to search out if these products even exist. Yes, I did leave the food in the dishes - I figured I may not figure this out right away and they needed to eat before, well, before that. I found a site that sells natural and organic food, supplements, you name it. It's http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/. We decided to try the ZiwiPeak Daily Dog Cuisine dry dog food and they LOVE it! We started them on it by doing the typical transition - 3/4 of their old and 1/4 of new, then 1/2 and 1/2 but, and this is no joke, they picked their new kibbles out first. So from then on, we went cold turkey.
They've been on it a few weeks now and no noticeable differences in their activity patterns...yet. We are outside all the time now anyway so they are still burning energy just as much as before. But, we have noticed they sleep better. Fewer movements and repositions at night. Which means fewer nameplate/rabies vacc. jingles at night and therefore, more sleep for us.
Check out their website - you can click on the link above or the banner below. We started with only one product but I'm on my way out there now to get some treats and check out what else they have. Fritz and Kramer...our furry kids...can't wait to get their paws on the treats I'm sure...they gobble up the food already!!
